CAVE 24 AJANTA
The interior of Cave 24 is barely roughed out, but the
doorway is beautifully carved. Instead of yaksis at the upper corners, two
river goddesses stand upon makaras. This motif shift may suggest a later
date for the cave.
The roughed interior is helpful to understand how these
caves were excavated, and how many people were working. From the counts
made by our group, there were about 200 people working on Cave 24 when work
suddenly stopped.
