CAVE 5 AJANTA

Cave 5 was never excaved; only the door was completed. There is only a few feet dug beyond it. This is important because it shows that the doors were being sculpted and finished before the cave was much excavated.

The door is not entirely complete, but what is sculpted is beautifully done.

The heavy, curvilinear figures and low-relief makaras point to an early date for the door.
